How to start seeds There are many different ways to germinate cacti seeds. We like the takeaway tub method which we were introduced to via San Pedro Mastery.  For substrate our preference is 50% coir, 25% worm castings, 20% perlite and the last 5% is the following ; gypsum, charcoal and coarse sand. Many successful growers simply use seed starting compost from the garden centre. LABEL your tubs! (first if you don't have a takeaway tub then any clear plastic lidded tub that's approximately 500ml to 800ml will do.) fill up the container with your mix. Get the mix wet but not soaking. sow the seeds onto the top of the substrate. Then a light misting with some water.  Once you have sealed the tub you are aiming to have enough moisture so that small droplets of condensation form on the lid. If large droplets form and drips from the lid take off the lid and shake off all of the moisture and then replace the lid - repeat if necessary after a day. Keep the tub at an ideal 27 to 29 centigrade. They will need some light, these seeds do not germinate in the dark.  It will take 2-3 weeks for most of the seeds to germinate. Keep an eye out for mould spreading on the surface of the substrate. If you find mould crack open the lid of the tub to allow airflow. Remove the lid slowly over time to acclimatise seedlings to the lower humidity.
