Elettaria cardomomum (Cardamon)

Cardomon is a tender perennial grown in southern India and Sri Lanka for use in cooking and Ayervedic medicine. Its pods are used to flavour both savoury and sweet dishes in traditional Indian cookery and it is popular also in Scandinavian baking.

In the UK Cardamon should be grown as an indoor pot plant and kept in a warm environment, away from drafts. It is a beautiful plant and is well worth taking the trouble to try to grow.

Glycyrrhiza glabra (Liquorice)

Liquorice is an herbaceous perennial grown for its sweet root which is used for confectionary, flavouring drinks and in some Chinese cookery. It grows to around a metre tall and bears inflorescences of purplish-blue flowers in the summer months.

It will grow happily outside in the UK as can be seen from its history of growing at Rievaulx Abbey near Thirsk in North Yorkshire which lead to the making of Pontefract cakes in that area. Although for culinary use it is grown for its root, it is an attractive plant and worthy of a place in the border.
